...Also there's some web apps I can apparently get to further play with shaders, but I've no idea how to integrate them into my browser.

It's Open GL.

I tried making a game once that that was through an API called SDL, open GL was too messy.

Well while it's Open GL, it's actually integrated into Game Maker.

Now I'm debating wether I should use a game engine like real engine or unity. Lots of tutorials on YT though.
